The 2023 Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals commenced with a display of sheer prowess from the reigning UAAP champions, De La Salle University (DLSU), and the bronze medalist, Adamson Lady Falcons.
In the opening matches held at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City, DLSU’s Lady Spikers, even without UAAP Rookie-MVP Angel Canino, proved their mettle as they secured an impressive 25-11, 25-17, 25-12 win over the University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas, marking a 1-0 record in Pool A. Within a mere 81 minutes, La Salle showcased their dominance, led by UAAP’s Best Middle Blocker Thea Gagate, who contributed 12 points through eight hits and four blocks. Amie Provido, Alleiah Malaluan, and Shevana Laput also provided stellar performances, with 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively.
Deputy mentor Noel Orcullo expressed the team’s satisfaction with their execution of the game plan while acknowledging the need to address remaining lapses. He emphasized the importance of respecting all opponents, as every team in the Shakey’s Super League has made thorough preparations.
The Lady Falcons from Adamson University also made a strong statement in their opening match under coach JP Yude, securing a convincing 25-17, 25-11, 25-17 victory against Jose Maria College Foundation Inc. (JMCF) from Davao. With rookie Red Bascon leading the charge with 11 points and contributions from Sharya Nicole Ancheta and Maria Rochelle Lalongisip with nine points each, Adamson earned a 1-0 record in Pool C.
Coach Yude commended the team’s strong start, instilling confidence in the players as they prepare for future games. He emphasized the importance of beginning and ending games with equal strength, noting the areas the team needs to work on.
The Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals also witnessed Luzon qualifier Enderun Colleges, emerging victorious in their match against Notre Dame of Dadiangas University with a score of 27-25, 25-22, 25-14, taking a 1-0 slate in Pool D. Althea Virnyce Botor and Erika Jin Deloria led the charge, contributing 17 and 16 points, respectively.
In another match, the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) champions, University of San Jose Recoletos, showcased their prowess as they blanked La Salle-Dasma 25-20, 25-18, 25-18, securing an early advantage in Pool B. Louneth Abangan’s stellar performance with 16 points led the Lady Jaguars to a commanding victory.
