Abra, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. personally extended a helping hand to families displaced by Super Typhoon Egay in a relief operation held in Abra on Saturday. During his visit, he assured the affected communities that more food packs and assistance are on the way, pending clearance of the landslide and flood-affected roads.
The President emphasized that emergency aid, including food, shelter, communication, and water supply, is in place and ready for distribution to those in need. He also disclosed that significant preparations have been made, with a considerable number of food packs already set aside. The next focus will be on providing critical water supply and restoring electricity in the affected areas.
In Abra province, the government has already provided P5.62 million worth of assistance, which includes 8,375 family food packs, 5,926 food and non-food items, 96 gallons of water, and 1,142 hygiene kits. The President reassured the affected residents that the local government units are committed to supporting their immediate recovery efforts.
Furthermore, the government is committed to helping residents rebuild their homes, which have been battered by the typhoon. President Marcos highlighted the forthcoming rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, stating that they will assess the extent of damages and provide building materials to facilitate the reconstruction process.
Aside from Abra, President Marcos also conducted situational briefings in Tuguegarao City and his hometown, Laoag City, in Ilocos Norte, to assess the extent of the typhoon’s devastation in Northern Luzon.
According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), the nationwide aid provided to survivors of Super Typhoon Egay amounts to P35.851 million in food and non-food items. Meanwhile, agricultural damages are estimated to be around P832 million.
Super Typhoon Egay, along with the southwest monsoon, has affected over 580,000 individuals and 1,752 barangays across the country, as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
In addition to the human toll, the typhoon has caused extensive infrastructure damage, amounting to P1.191 billion in Regions I, Mimaropa, V, VI, XI, XII, and BARMM. Furthermore, 89 roads in various regions, including CAR, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Soccsksargen, were damaged due to flooding and erosions.
As the recovery efforts continue, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to providing timely aid and support to those affected by the disaster.
