
loilo City – Senator Imee Marcos, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation, firmly supports the proposal for a 6-year term for barangay officials.In an interview with the Iloilo City Hall Press Corps, Senator Marcos likened the Senate’s constant pursuit of elections to hampering the implementation of projects, especially amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Moreover, Senator Marcos plans to introduce amendments to the qualifications required to run for the Sangguniang Kabataan, the youth council. She expressed her concerns about the difficulties in filling positions in barangays due to the Anti-dynasty Law, which limits opportunities for families to hold multiple positions within a community.Regarding the Anti-dynasty Law’s effectiveness, Senator Marcos remains uncertain, given that often, family members are the only qualified candidates in a given community.
To enhance the functionality of Barangay Officials, Senator Marcos stressed the importance of being “realistic” in achieving their intended goals.As discussions continue, Senator Marcos aims to address the challenges faced by barangay officials and explore ways to improve governance and representation at the grassroots level.
