President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has provided reassurance to the public, assuring them that the country’s rice supply remains ample and unaffected, despite the significant agricultural damage caused by Typhoons Egay and Falcon.
In a video message, President Marcos, who also serves as the concurrent Agriculture Secretary, conveyed the results of his meeting with agricultural officials. He affirmed that the nation’s rice buffer stock remains stable and capable of meeting the population’s needs.
“The recent typhoons have indeed caused substantial damage to our agricultural sector, but I want to assure every Filipino that our rice supply is secure,” President Marcos stated.
He also highlighted the government’s proactive measures to manage the situation. “We have meticulously examined various agricultural factors to ensure that the prices of rice in the market remain steady,” he added.
President Marcos detailed the efforts being undertaken, saying, “We have devised a comprehensive plan that encompasses sourcing our production locally, and if necessary, initiating imports.”
While acknowledging the declining trend in rice imports, President Marcos emphasized that the government stands ready to respond in the face of emergencies. “Our imports have been on a decreasing trajectory, which is a positive sign. However, in times of crisis, such as this, we must assess the need for additional imports,” he explained.
During a subsequent press briefing at the Palace, Agriculture Undersecretary Mercedita Sombilla shed light on the specifics of the planned importation. “We are looking into importing approximately 1.3 million metric tons of rice. The necessary preparations are underway, and we are working to finalize the scheduling,” Sombilla stated.
She also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the private sector. “In these critical situations, we rely on the support and cooperation of the private sector. We are engaging in discussions and consultations to ensure a cohesive approach,” Sombilla added.
As the government takes proactive steps to maintain a steady rice supply, the assurance from President Marcos Jr. serves as a source of confidence for the Filipino populace, particularly amid the challenges posed by recent typhoons.
