The agricultural sector in Western Visayas, specifically Region 6, has faced a staggering setback as recent heavy rains and floods caused by the combined impact of the southwest monsoon and Typhoon Egay resulted in PHP70.444 million in production losses. The data, compiled by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and released by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC-6) on Thursday, outlines the grim toll this weather event has taken on local farmers.
The reported losses translate to a substantial volume of 2,732.8 metric tons across various crops, including rice. Fortunately, the assessment indicated that there was no significant damage to infrastructure, machinery, or equipment as a result of the inclement weather.
Among the affected provinces, Negros Occidental bore the brunt of the losses, with a staggering PHP50.358 million in damages. Following closely, Iloilo province reported PHP10.526 million in losses, Antique with PHP6.95 million, and Guimaras with PHP2.609 million.
The adverse weather conditions have impacted a total of 3,345 hectares of crops across the four provinces. Notably, Negros Occidental recorded the most extensive effect with 2,672 hectares of affected crops. Iloilo province faced damage to 358.52 hectares, Antique to 223.55 hectares, and Guimaras to 90.58 hectares.
Despite the grim situation, there remains a glimmer of hope for recovery. Approximately 3,235 hectares of the affected crop areas in Western Visayas still have a chance to recuperate. Regrettably, 109.77 hectares have suffered irreparable damage.
The toll on local farmers has been significant, with a total of 3,461 individuals directly impacted across the four provinces. Among them, 2,695 farmers in Negros Occidental, 358 in Iloilo province, 298 in Antique, and 110 in Guimaras are contending with the aftermath of this natural disaster.
