ILOILO CITY: A substantial P1.1 Million worth of illegal drugs seized during an October 13, 2023 buy-bust operation has thrown the effectiveness of the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC) in Rizal Pala-Pala 1 into question. Police Lt. Col. Antonio Benitez has brought attention to the exclusion of recently arrested individuals from the BADAC list, raising doubts about the council’s ability to tackle local drug-related issues.
Barangay Captain Alain Rey Depatillo had previously issued warnings about the alleged involvement of these individuals in illegal drug activities, but their names were conspicuously absent from the BADAC list. The operation led to the apprehension of John John Verde Brillantes, a 24-year-old lumpia wrapper maker from Barangay Rizal Pala-Pala-1, Iloilo City, found in possession of 170 grams of illegal drugs valued at P1.156 Million. Brillantes’ legal-age live-in partner, known as ‘Nene,’ was also taken into custody.
Details of the operation disclosed that Brillantes initially sold one sachet for P22,000, with an additional 13 sachets seized from a red sling bag. Both individuals are currently detained at Police Station Number 1, facing charges under Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
Benitez is urging heightened vigilance and active involvement from other barangay officials in the fight against illegal drugs. The incident has sparked concerns about the efficacy of local anti-drug councils and their role in curbing drug-related activities within communities.
