In preparation for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the Philippine National Police (PNP) is taking extensive measures to ensure a peaceful and orderly voting process across the nation. PNP Chief PGen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and other concerned agencies to lay out a comprehensive security plan.
The PNP is actively monitoring potential private armed groups (PAGs) known for causing disturbances during elections. The PAGs, often responsible for acts of intimidation and violence, have been a recurring concern in past elections. The PNP has identified 38 potential PAGs, four of which are currently considered active threats.
Loose firearms, frequently employed by opposing factions during elections, are also under the PNP’s vigilant scrutiny. PGen. Acorda disclosed that a staggering 48,599 loose firearms are still unconfiscated, and legal actions have been taken against 14,000 individuals associated with these firearms.
Despite their proactive approach, the PNP is awaiting the final assessment of hotspots from the Comelec, following their recent joint coordination meeting. PGen. Acorda assured the public that the PNP is fully committed to providing the necessary security measures to facilitate a smooth and trouble-free electoral process.
