The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is currently evaluating the designation of the Red Sea as a high-risk zone for Filipino seafarers following a series of hijacking incidents. Vessels carrying Filipino seafarers have been targeted in recent events, raising concerns about the safety of Filipino workers in the area.
To address these concerns, the DMW is actively collaborating with employers and the maritime sector. They are also working in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and international stakeholders in the maritime and shipping industry to ensure the safety and security of Filipino seafarers operating in the region.
Efforts have already been made by the DMW to reach out to the families of two Filipino crew members who managed to escape the hijackings. The agency is committed to providing support and assistance to these individuals and their families during this challenging time.
By designating the Red Sea as a high-risk zone, the importance of prioritizing the safety of Filipino seafarers is highlighted. The DMW, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, aims to enhance security measures and protect the welfare of Filipino seafarers working in the region.
The challenges faced by the maritime industry necessitate close cooperation among government agencies, employers, and international partners. By working together, it is possible to create a safer environment for seafarers. The DMW remains dedicated to its mission of safeguarding the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers, including seafarers, and will continue to monitor and address concerns pertaining to their safety and security.
