One of the reasons cited for the declaration of the suspension of face-to-face classes in the city of Iloilo is the significant risk to the health of students and teachers. In an interview with RMN Iloilo, Mr. Renz Louiz Baquiano, Emergency Operations Center Staff at the City Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), outlined some parameters or considerations for the aforementioned declaration.
According to Baquiano, they based their decision on the forecasted heat index in the city, which is expected to reach as high as 41 to 42 degrees Celsius for April 1 and April 2. The official noted that the urban heat in Iloilo City is exacerbated due to the limited tree cover compared to the province.
Baquiano explained that the suspension of face-to-face classes in the city aims to prevent harm to both students and teachers during hot and humid weather conditions. He further emphasized that they will continue monitoring the heat index and will coordinate with Iloilo City Mayor Treñas for their recommendations regarding the conduct of classes in the city.
