Agricultural losses due to the impact of the El Niño phenomenon have soared to over P357.4 million across various regions in the country, according to Agriculture Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Arnel De Mesa. The Western Visayas region has reported the highest damages, he stated.
De Mesa emphasized that while the effects of the current strong El Niño are significant, they are not deemed as severe compared to past occurrences, particularly the 1997 event. Nonetheless, the Department of Agriculture is already preparing for the onset of La Niña in the second quarter of the year to safeguard affected sectors.
