Tragedy struck in Sibalom, Antique, as a woman lost her life after sustaining over 30 stab wounds during a brutal altercation with her live-in partner. The victim was identified as Rena Jane, 28 years old, from Barangay Maasin, Sibalom, Antique, while the suspect was identified as Elizarde Arnaiz, 38 years old, from Barangay Banban, Lawaan, Antique. Around 12:45 AM on July 24, 2023, in Barangay San Juan, Sibalom, Antique, the horrifying incident unfolded. According to PMAJ Renato Monreal, head of the Sibalom, Antique Municipal Police Station, jealousy was the motive behind the heinous crime.
The suspect allegedly confessed to the police that he caught his live-in partner chatting with another man, igniting a violent confrontation. Tragically, the murder occurred in the presence of their own five-year-old son, who witnessed the horrendous act. Fleeing the scene on a motorcycle, the suspect took their five-year-old child with him, leaving behind a scene of devastation. Overwhelmed with guilt, the suspect sought refuge and confessed to the barangay captain in a village in Antique province on July 25, 2023. On the same day, the Sibalom, Antique MPS filed a murder case against the suspect, according to PMAJ Monreal.
The suspect’s means of livelihood was selling fish. The couple’s child is now under the care of the victim’s relatives, and counseling will be provided to help him cope with the traumatic experience of witnessing his mother’s murder. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of jealousy and violence within relationships. It prompts authorities and communities to prioritize efforts in addressing domestic issues and providing support to victims and their families.
