Dingras, Ilocos Norte – Unrelenting heavy rainfall has left several households in Dingras, Ilocos Norte inundated, with floodwaters persisting in various barangays. Mr. Halston Joseph Castro, the local disaster risk reduction and management officer, reported that the worst-affected areas include Brgy. Baresbes, Barong, Mandaloque, Bagut, Puruganan, Root, and other low-lying regions.
Despite the challenges brought on by the ongoing flooding, the resilient residents have sought refuge in the evacuation centers established by their respective barangays and the municipal evacuation center. Others have turned to their relatives and neighbors for temporary shelter amidst the calamity.
Some residents have opted to stay in the upper floors of their homes; however, this decision comes with considerable risks, especially given the continuous rainfall and rising water levels.
The torrential floods have wreaked havoc on the agriculture sector, causing substantial losses. Initial estimates put the value of the affected crops, including rice, corn, high-value commercial crops, and livestock, at over 15 million pesos.
Castro pointed out that the damage assessment is ongoing, and the total economic impact is expected to increase as authorities gain better access to communication lines and reach all the affected areas for a comprehensive evaluation.
However, the challenging conditions hinder rescue and relief efforts as responders face obstacles due to impassable roads and persistent heavy rains.
