Amidst the chaos unfolding in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas has delivered a bold condemnation of Hamas, asserting that the group “does not represent the Palestinian people.” The striking declaration was made during high-stakes discussions with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
In a resolute stand, Abbas reaffirmed the exclusive legitimacy of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) as the authentic representative of the Palestinian people, revealing the deep-seated divisions within Palestinian political factions.
As the leaders engaged in talks on the deteriorating situation in Gaza, Abbas decried what he termed “indiscriminate attacks” by Israel. President Maduro, expressing unwavering support, pledged a substantial 30 tons of humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people, set to be swiftly dispatched in the coming days.
Their joint call for an immediate ceasefire and the creation of a humanitarian assistance corridor resonated strongly, emphasizing the pressing need to return to “international legality” in addressing the crisis.
Meanwhile, on the ground, the conflict has escalated into a full-scale war, with Israel’s declaration following a breach of the heavily fortified border by waves of Hamas fighters. The subsequent relentless bombing campaign has exacted a heavy toll, claiming the lives of at least 2,670 people in the Gaza Strip, predominantly ordinary Palestinians.
As Israel’s army issues urgent directives for residents in the north of Gaza to seek safety in the south, anticipations rise for a looming ground offensive. Aid groups are sounding alarms over an impending humanitarian disaster, with reports of nearly one million people displaced and growing complaints of water shortages.
