Iloilo City is preparing to roll out its enhanced Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP) in the first quarter of 2024. The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Jerry TreƱas, is set to revolutionize the city’s public transportation system.
Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) Head, Jeck Conlu, emphasized the need for thorough preparation before the plan takes effect. This includes the development of a comprehensive driver’s manual and the finalization of designated loading and unloading zones.
Due to the limited supply of thermoplastic paint, 28 loading and unloading bays have been painted along Iznart to Plaza Libertad in the City Proper, out of a total of 850 planned bays citywide. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 6 will also provide support in the installation of loading bays.
In a collaborative effort, transport cooperatives and businesses have committed to donating traffic signs to aid in the plan’s successful implementation.
The enhanced LPTRP encompasses a variety of elements, including the mobilization of both modernized and traditional jeepneys, the designation of loading and unloading bays, and extensive training for drivers. Presently, there are 517 modernized units operating out of a permitted total of 1,782 units under LPTRP regulations.
The LPTRP will benefit from the operation of 2,299 modernized and traditional jeepneys serving 25 different routes. PSTMO assures that with the full implementation of LPTRP, there will be an ample number of modernized jeepneys to efficiently serve commuters and provide an improved transportation system throughout the city.
