Iloilo City, Philippines – The proposed budget for the year 2024 in Iloilo City faces limitations due to a reduction in the National Tax Allocation (NTA) from the national government. Mayor Jerry Trenas has highlighted concerns within the budget, particularly impacting salaries for Jobhires and Contract of Service (COS) employees.
According to Mayor Trenas, the budget only covers salaries for Jobhires and COS employees from January to November. There is a four-month gap in the budget allocation for allowances provided by the city to employees of national government agencies, including the Police, Bureau of Fire (BFP), Judiciary, teachers, and others.
Trenas explained that this situation is a common occurrence, and it is expected to be rectified later in the year through tax collection in the last quarter. However, the mayor has not yet disclosed the specific figures of the proposed 2024 budget submitted to the City Council.
In the current year, 2023, the city’s budget stands at P2.95 billion, marking a 4% decrease from the P3.083 billion budget in 2021. This decrease is attributed to a P133 million reduction in the city’s NTA share.
