The farmers in Region 6 of Western Visayas suffered significant losses after Typhoon Egay ravaged their rice crops, resulting in damages amounting to over P9 million. The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 6 confirmed this distressing situation based on their data collection.
A total of 574 farmers were affected by the devastating typhoon, with 476 hailing from Negros Occidental and 96 from the province of Antique.
The destructive impact did not end there, as 21.11 hectares of rice fields were entirely damaged, while 507.97 hectares experienced partial damage, leading to a production loss of approximately 395.87 Metric Tons (MT). There were no recorded damages to machinery and agricultural infrastructures in the affected areas.
Fishermen and farmers in the Western Visayas provinces are now persevering and working tirelessly to recover from the setback caused by Typhoon Egay.
Authorities are continuously monitoring the situation and providing necessary assistance and support to the affected communities. They are also preparing for potential additional calamities and taking proactive measures to protect the livelihoods and well-being of residents in the region.
