During a press conference held today, August 3, the Department of Health Western Visayas (DOH WV CHD) revealed alarming statistics about the prevalence of respiratory illnesses in the region. Data from the previous year indicated that 5 out of the top 10 leading causes of morbidity were lung-related.
Nurse Joh Richard Lapascua, Nurse V of the Non-Communicable Disease Unit at DOH WV CHD, disclosed the top 5 respiratory-related conditions affecting the region. Pneumonia topped the list, followed by Acute Respiratory Infection for individuals aged 5 years and above. Tuberculosis (all forms) ranked sixth, while Acute Respiratory Infection for children aged 5 and below secured the seventh spot. Lastly, Bronchitis rounded out the top 10 leading causes of morbidity.
Disturbingly, the number of patients seeking medical attention for lung-related illnesses at health centers significantly increased in 2022 compared to the previous year, 2021.
Nurse Lapascua emphasized the importance of National Lung Month, celebrated this month, to raise awareness about the preventable risk factors that contribute to respiratory diseases. He urged the public, especially smokers, to avoid modifiable risk factors like smoking, as it compromises the immune system and exacerbates lung health issues.
With respiratory diseases posing a considerable health burden in the region, it is crucial for individuals to take responsibility for their well-being and heed health authorities’ advice to protect themselves and others from these potentially life-threatening conditions.
