ILOILO CITY – The much-anticipated Iloilo Arts Festival 2023 kicked off on October 5 at the SM City Events Center, highlighting the vibrant spirit of Ilonggo culture and artistic expression. Themed “Hugyaw: Adlaw ta ini mga Ilonggo,” the event, organized by the Iloilo City Local Culture and Arts Council (ICLCAC), aimed to celebrate Ilonggo traditions and propel Iloilo City’s aspirations to be a key arts hub in the Philippines.
Mayor Jerry Treñas, Chairman of ICLCAC, underscored the festival’s commitment to supporting local artists and elevating their creations. Collaborations with Cinematahum, Artivism: Kikik Collective, and the United Architects of the Philippines—Iloilo and Madia-as Chapter added depth and diversity to the artistic offerings.
Scheduled throughout October, a series of events and competitions, including Singing Ilonggo Composition, Street Dance, Dance Sport, and Short and Sweet Play, will captivate the community. The historical significance of October 5, known as “Adlaw sang Ciudad de Iloilo,” dates back to 1889 when Queen Regent Maria Cristina of Spain bestowed the title of “City” upon the Municipality of Iloilo, as documented in “Gaceta de Manila,” the official publication of the Spanish Colonial Government of the Philippines.
